OverviewAll people can be irrational at times, according to Phil McGraw, a clinical psychologist and television talk show host. Displaying certain characteristics can end a relationship quickly. Although partners cannot change what has happened, they can constructively deal with the problems in a relationship. McGraw advises that instead of giving up, find the courage to deal with your difficulties head on.Step 1Consider what is going wrong with the relationship. Identifying the problem is the first step toward resolving it. When things get too heated, stay out of each other’s space until you calm down. You don’t want high emotions to cause you to say or do something you may regret later. Sometimes issues seem different after just a brief respite. The American Psychological Association recommends that couples use humor and laughter in their daily lives to help keep everything in perspective.Step 2Talk without arguing. Listen to what your partner is saying. You might not always agree about an issue, but you should be open to what the other person thinks. Effective communication is key to understanding what each of you wants and needs from the relationship.Step 3Apologize for what you have done wrong in the relationship, yet avoid pointing the finger of blame. Honestly admitting your mistakes helps to build trust. If you truly want to save the relationship, you may have to make a choice between having things your way, or doing what it takes to nurture the relationship to health.Step 4Show the other person that you still care by the things you do. Your actions can say more than words. Simply being attentive can help to ease a stressful moment. Focus on building your relationship on a foundation of caring, and appreciate the good qualities you see in each other.Step 5Contribute to the relationship. When people begin to feel too comfortable with each other, they may no longer work as hard to meet their responsibilities in the relationship. The American Psychological Association says it’s important to continue to offer your partner encouragement and support, as well as share intimacy.Source: livestrong.com
