More than two months after rainstorm displaced about 500 persons in the Central Tongu district of the Volta Region, relief is yet to reach the affected people from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Despite NADMO officials visiting the affected areas to register affected residents a day after the disaster, it is yet to dispatch relief items. Residents say the community is struggling to recover as a result of this.
Assembly member for Mafi Zongo electoral area Julius Karl Fieve said, “the community is very worried that over two months after the incident, nothing has been done…individuals whose houses and properties were destroyed are helpless and hopeless.”
The storm destroyed 46 homes in Mafi Seva, 21 in Mafi Wudzrolo and 10 in Mafi Agbadzikorfe. This left residents with nowhere to sleep. Two church buildings and a private school were also destroyed.
The Mafi Seva CHPS Compound which residents rely on for health care delivery was also destroyed.
“The clinic is not able to function as before. The damaged clinic is still there. Subsequent rains are affecting the medical equipment and records. In fact, it is worrying,” Mr. Fieve said.
He added: “It is affecting the lives of the people. Day in and day out, you see them moving around helplessly. It is affecting health care delivery. The children of the victims are most affected.”
The Assembly member was speaking to Joy News when the Global Shapers Kumasi Hub presented 32 bags of cement worth 980 cedis to the community to help with recovery efforts.
Mr. Jorge Appiah who handed over the items on behalf of the Global Shapers Kumasi Hub said: “the Kumasi Hub of the Global Shapers Community was taken aback by the storm that hit the Mafi Seva Community” hence the donation.
Community leader Mr. Emmanuel K. Azienyeku, expressed gratitude to the hub for the donation and promised the cements will be used for their intended purpose.
