The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to strengthen digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills development across Ghana's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The partnership forms part of efforts to equip young Ghanaians with the skills required to meet the demands of an increasingly digital and technology-driven economy.

The signing ceremony, held at GETFund's headquarters in Accra, brought together key stakeholders from the education sector, industry and development partners. The collaboration was described as a significant milestone in Ghana's drive to modernise technical education.

Speaking at the event, UNESCO's Country Representative to Ghana, Edmond Moukala, commended GETFund for its continued investment in education.

"This signing ceremony marks a strategic milestone in UNESCO's shared commitment to transforming education in Ghana through innovation, partnership and digital transformation," he said.

Mr Moukala noted that equipping TVET students with digital and AI competencies would not only enhance their global competitiveness but also position Ghana to harness the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Administrator of GETFund, Paul Adjei, said the Fund remains committed to investing in initiatives that deliver lasting benefits for Ghana's youth.

"As technology continues to transform industries and redefine the future of work, the need to equip our young people with relevant digital competencies, AI capabilities and innovation-driven skills has become more urgent than ever," he said.

Mr Adjei described the Letter of Intent as more than a formal agreement, saying it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana's education transformation agenda.

He explained that by combining UNESCO's global expertise in digital transformation with GETFund's commitment to financing education, the partnership would help build sustainable digital learning ecosystems across the country.

According to him, the collaboration will focus on introducing AI education, modernising TVET curricula, equipping instructors with new digital skills and expanding opportunities for students to access future-ready careers.

Mr Adjei also reaffirmed GETFund's commitment to strategic investments in educational infrastructure, human capital development and innovative programmes aimed at improving access to quality education nationwide.

Among those who witnessed the signing ceremony were Microsoft's Head of Government Affairs for Africa, Akua Gyekye, KPMG Ghana's Head of Corporate Affairs and Accounting Advisory Services, Joyceline Coleman, and other representatives from the education and private sectors.

Stakeholders described the partnership as timely, noting that integrating AI and digital skills into TVET education would help bridge the gap between classroom instruction and the needs of industry.

Under the partnership, GETFund and UNESCO are expected to implement joint programmes, capacity-building initiatives and infrastructure support to prepare TVET graduates not only for employment but also for entrepreneurship in the digital economy.
