Residents of Duta community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region now have portable water after waiting for several years, thanks to the construction of a mechanised borehole by students of the University of Health and Allied Science (UHAS), Ho.
The borehole has the capacity to pump approximately 10,000 gallons of water per hour into an overhead tank from where residents can fetch for domestic use.
The students' group of UHAS called Embak who emerged winners at last year’s Community Service Award (CSA) made this possible. Prior to this, the people of Duta had for several years depended on water from polluted sources. Others had to walk long distances to have potable water.

The Embak group aims to promote the spirit of volunteerism among the youth and the society at large, especially tertiary students.
Duta community was captured in a documentary by JoyNews Seth Kwame Boateng themed: “CANDIDATES FOR DEATH” which highlighted how the people have had to depend on the only source of drinking water which got polluted with cement dust from activities of Diamond Cement Company Limited.
The company has reportedly committed to providing potable water to compensate the community.
