The Lands Commission has assured Ghanaians it will investigate all bribery claims brought against its officials.

Director in charge of Land Registration, K. Owusu Opoku said the Commission will sanction any official found to have engaged in any questionable deal.

He was reacting to claims by some landowners that officials of the Commission demand money to the tune of ¢50,000 before helping them with their land registration.

The revelation was contained in Joy News’ latest Hotline documentary titled Land Wars by Latif Iddrisu.

In the documentary, a landowner claimed he was asked to pay ¢25,000 in order to be issued with the necessary documents covering his land.

“I approached the Commission with my indentures that I want to register my land [but] there were delays,” he opened up to the reporter.

He said he phoned an official at the Commission to ask about his registration documents, but he was told to pay ¢25,000.

The money was meant to quicken the process, he said.

“What choice do I have?” he asked, adding he had to comply.

But the Commission has vowed to investigate that claim and many others that have been levelled against its officials.

Mr Opoku explained delays with land registration are sometimes caused by the people who allocate the land.

“Many of the problems are due to multiple allocations. For example, a particular chief has given the land to several people and you don't know who the original owner of the land is,” he said.
