Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) is to launch a foundation to support two crucial social endeavours necessary for national development, come November 22, 2007.
The foundation will focus on the areas of education and health, Ms. Mawuena Dumor, Corporate Services Executive of the MTN announced in Accra on Wednesday.
She was presenting a cheque of 150 million Cedis to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports towards the national Best Teacher Awards Scheme.
Ms Dumor said MTN was looking at ways to partner the government and the people of Ghana because it (MTN) had an obligation that went beyond their core business.
“We (MTN) have it as a rule to set up a fund to support social activities in any country we operate in…..And we recognise it is important to be part of development as our business grows”, she said.
The MTN, she said, recognised excellence in every area of expertise and thus had decided to “recognise the excellent work of the Ghanaian teacher” and celebrate their support to national development because “Education is an important key to development”.
Mrs Angelina Baiden Amissah, Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in-charge of pre-tertiary education, who received the donation expressed gratitude for the gesture and called on MTN to do more for education reform in the country.
