Nearly 800 youth have been employed under the various modules of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in the Dormaa Municipality.
Mr Godfred Acheaw, Municipal NYEP Coordinator, told the Ghana News Agency at Dormaa-Ahenkro that the figure was expected to rise by the beginning of the main farming season when more hands would be required under the Youth in Agriculture module.
He said the Youth in Afforestation topped the list with 300 employees planting odum, teak and other economic tree seedlings in nine communities to check deforestation in the area.
Mr. Acheaw said the Zoomlion Company Limited, with staff strength of 146, served as the reference point for good sanitation, especially in Dormaa-Ahenkro.
He said 102 Senior High School graduates had also been enrolled under the Youth in Community Teaching module to beef up teaching staff strength in the municipality.
"We have also embraced the youth in hairdressing and dressmaking and have so far taken 32 and 40 apprentice hairdressers and dressmakers, respectively."
Under the Youth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) there are 25 youth undergoing the art of repairing and assembling mobile phones, Mr. Acheaw added.
On the objectives of the NYEP policy, Mr. Acheaw expressed worry about the desire of the employees to acquire permanent status in the modules instead of striving to better their Senior High School grades for further studies.
