The Students Representative Council of the Accra Campus, University of Ghana has condemned acts of vandalism by a section of students on the Legon campus. A statement signed by the Accra Campus SRC President Apanga Lamtiig Abugri, pledged students support for the In-out-out-out accommodation policy and condemned the vandalism that greeted its opposition by sections of the students. While condemning the students for their uncouth behaviour in smearing examination halls with excreta, the statement said the University Authorities should engage the students in dialogue to address the issue. Read the full statement: With regards to recent reaction of students to the new residential policy dubbed In-out-out-out, the SRC UG-ACC wish to state its position unequivocally. The Policy The SRC UG-ACC appreciates the effort of the University and stakeholders in their quest to find solutions to the perennial accommodation problem facing the Nation's premier University. Though the policy may not favour a large number of students residing on campus, we are however, of the view that policies such as this are in the general interest of students and not a particular section of students. The SRC UG-ACC wishes to state clearly that we support in principle the new policy. Nevertheless, we find the mode the mode in which the decision was arrived at, as unfortunate. A decision such as this that directly affects students should at least have involved the student leadership. Though the University may not be obliged to consult the student leadership in every decision making process, an exception could have been made in this case. Students Reaction We find the demonstration by a section of students seriously inappropriate despite the justification for doing so and believe that perhaps dialogue would have been a better option under this circumstance. The attempt to boycott end of semester examination perhaps would have attracted the attention of authorities to reconsider the decision, however, it certainly would not have solved the problem. It would perhaps have distorted the academic calendar and created unnecessary tension. THE SRC UG ACC WISHES TO STATE CLEARLY THAT IT WILL NOT BE PARTY TO ANY ATTEMPT TO BOYCOTT THE ON-GOING EXAMINATIONS. WE THEREFORE ENTREAT ALL STUDENTS OF ACCRA CITY CAMPUS IN PARTICULAR AND THE UNIVERSITY IN GENERAL TO PREPARE AND TAKE ALL REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS. 'The Shameful Act' Reports in the media and eye-witness accounts tell us of smearing of examination halls on Legon campus with human excreta on April 28, 2007. It is an act of barbarism and absolutely uncalled for in an intellectual community such as the University of Ghana against the motto 'Integri Procedamus' and wish to condemn the act in its entirety. This act is an indictment on the security apparatus on campus. Conclusion In conclusion, we urge students and University authorities to resort to dialogue, since this would have curtailed the current impasse on Legon campus.
