Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has called for the mandatory use of body cameras by law enforcement officers during search operations to ensure transparency and accountability.
His comments follow recent allegations that GH₵10,000 and jewelry were stolen during a National Security raid in the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison's residence, raising concerns about misconduct.
In an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, March 22, Mr Tuah-Yeboah said best practices require that a suspect or an independent witness be present during searches to prevent any disputes over missing items.
However, in this particular case, he noted that if the allegations are true, then the officers who conducted the search may have committed a crime themselves.
He also expressed concerns over reports that security cameras at the search location were deactivated during the operation.
“If cameras were turned off, it raises serious questions. Any footage from those cameras should first be reviewed before being taken away for investigations,” he stressed.
To prevent such incidents in the future, Mr Tuah-Yeboah strongly recommended that all officers conducting searches wear body cameras to capture their actions in real-time arguing that this measure would not only protect suspects from potential abuse but also safeguard officers from false accusations.
