The Accra Metropolitan Assembly says it has put on hold, the embossment of numbers on cabs operating within the metropolis due to the new transport system - Bus Rapid Transport system about to be introduced.
Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Nii Nuumo Blafo has told Asempa News the embossment exercise will be on hold until March when the assembly would have been through with the registration of buses/cars for the Bus Rapid Transport. The BRT is supposed to improve transportation and ease vehicular traffic.
Nuumo Blafo said the AMA is also reviewing the wearing of ‘sea blue shirts’ by drivers in Accra.
IThe AMA introduced the directive in 2007-2008 when Ghana was celebrating its golden jubilee anniversary and the CAN 2008 African Cup of Nations but that has become only a directive as Asempa News can confirmed that only a few drivers including Kaneshie/Tema Station drivers and their mates still wear their uniforms.
In a related development, Head of Urban Passenger Transport Unit of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Madam Korama Ocran, said it will take up to two years for the Bus Rapid Transit Project (BRT) to be fully operational.
In an interview with Asempa News, Madam Ocran noted that the first phase which is the route registration is underway. According to her, only drivers who are members of the various drivers’ unions will be registered under the route registration for the BRT Project with works on roads for the BRT already under construction from the Graphic Road.
