The Solicitor of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Enoch Aboagye, who was recently dismissed, has sued Mr. William Ampem Darko, the beleaguered Director General of the GBC.
Mr. Ampem Darko has however started a compulsory leave after a directive from the National Media Commission compelled him to do so.
According to Mr. Aboagye, he took the court action because he was wrongfully dismissed by Mr. Ampem Darko and he is praying the Court to declare his dismissal null and void.
He also wants certain steps that were taken against him leading to the dismissal to be annulled so that he can be restored to all his benefits.
He told Citi News that he was appointed by the Governing Council of the GBC and cannot be dismissed by the Director General.
“He did not have the right to dismiss me. I was employed by the Governing Board of the Corporation and therefore if there was any disciplinary action to be taken against me, it was the power of the Governing and not that of the Director-General. The Board had actually asked him not to take that action against me without the top authority but he went ahead".
Meanwhile the Board Chairman of the GBC Professor John Aheto, who has also been asked by the National Media Commission to step aside whilst investigations continue, has told Citi News, Mr. Apem Darko occasionally usurped the powers of the governing council and was literally running a “one-man-show” at the state broadcaster. He said Mr. Ampem Darko did a “great disservice to Ghana”.
“He engaged in serious financial mismanagement and took decisions that were within the authority of the Board. Contracts were being improperly awarded, revenues not being collected, income leaking from the Regional offices. On yearly basis, about twenty to thirty percent of income physically received in cash was not accounted for".
"It was about time that somebody put a stop to it so when we took over that was our first priority and immediately it got the displeasure of the Director-General and so many people but we were not bothered because we knew we were on the right path” he said.
Professor Aheto told Citi News if his stepping aside will assist investigations into the State Broadcaster’s operations and put it back on track, he has no worries once he has not committed any crime.
