Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu the III, is committing to the fight against misconception and discrimination against children with Cerebral Palsy.

She says the tendency for parents to tag such children as river babies and even kill them in some instances is unfortunate.

Nana Konadu made the pledge when local NGO, Kids and Single Parent Care Foundation paid a courtesy call on her at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

She believes support from the Asantehemaa will encourage the foundation to liaise with other organisation to educate the public on the condition.

Cerebral Palsy is considered a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is under development. Cerebral Palsy primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination. Though Cerebral Palsy can be defined, having Cerebral Palsy does not define the person that has the condition.

Madam Opoku says some parents resort to killing the children out of frustration and high cost of treating

She says all hands must be on deck to overcome the stigma.

Madam Opoku noted the Asantehemaa occupied unique position in the traditional set up and that her tremendous influence could make a change by bringing down the stigmatisation.

Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disability, Fred Tabi Amponsah want parents to educate their physically challenged children to make them useful citizens in future.
