The man who is alleged to be behind the recent attacks on the Ga Mantse's Palace was Wednesday arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court charged with abetment of crime. The accused, Nii Tackie Obilie, also known as Ayittey Canada, a traditionalist, was, however, granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 with two sureties to be justified. In the dock with him were three alleged accomplices charged with unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage and assault. They are Nii Saban-Quaye, a goldsmith; Otu Blankson, a photographer, and Isaac Ayittey Quaye, a fisherman.Nii Saban-Quaye is facing an additional charge of stealing. The court, presided over by Mr C. A. Wilson, remanded the three persons to reappear on June 7, 2010.Presenting the facts of the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reynolds Agyemang said all the accused persons lived at Gbese, a suburb of Accra. He said about 1.30 a.m. on May 24, 2010, Nii Saban-Quaye, Otu, Isaac and 17 others now at large went to the Ga Mantse's Palace on the orders of Nii Obilie, who is in a chieftaincy dispute with the Ga Mantse, to remove all the furniture in the waiting room there.Mr Agyemang said the three accused persons and the others gained access to the palace by scaling the wall.“During the course of the operation, the accused persons caused damage to eight louvre blades, valued at GH¢ 16, in the window through which they passed to the main hall. They forcibly opened two store rooms and took away a 45-inch Plasma TV set, some Binatone appliances like wall clocks, fans and coffee mixers, three amplifiers and two speakers, all at a total value not yet known," he said. The prosecutor said the accused persons also caused damage to five talking drums, worth GH¢1,000, and later went upstairs where the caretaker of the palace was living, attacked him and his wife and assaulted them with the machetes they were carrying.Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
