Dr. Abdulai Jinapor, spokesperson for the Buipewura has charged the police to live up to their responsibilities by bringing to book persons he says are perpetrating lawlessness in the area. Four persons including the linguist of the Buipewura, Abdulai Jinapor II, were on Thursday evening shot at by yet to be identified persons in Buipe, the capital of the Central Gonja district in the Northern Region, leaving one in critical condition at the regional hospital. The Police confirmed receiving news of the incident and were yet to investigate it. According to the spokesperson, the suspected perpetrators belong to a faction laying claim to the Buipe skin. He told Joy FM there were rumours in the area that the faction had caused to be beaten the traditional gong gong to announce the performance of rites preceding the traditional Damba festival, following which the Buipewura sent the four men, including the linguist, to report the infraction to the police. He said the four were ambushed and shot while on their way to the police station. “We have their names, we know the individuals who did that. We are going to report it to the police, but what we are saying is that the police have to do their job, they have to do their job. This is not about chieftaincy, it is about the rule of law, it’s a criminal act.” Urging the Regional Police commander, the district commander and other police heads in the area to bring to book anyone who perpetrates violence against law abiding citizens, Dr. Abdulai Jinapor said a resort to arms and violence should not be encouraged.
