The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior, has ordered the temporary closure of the Ho Central Mosque for two weeks, beginning Thursday, January 1, 2026.
In a statement issued after an emergency meeting on Monday, December 29, REGSEC said the decision was taken to prevent further tension within the Muslim community in Ho following a dispute over leadership.
According to the statement, the action follows “troubling developments within the Muslim community of Ho”, where two individuals are claiming the position of Regional Chief Imam.
“The Volta Regional Security Council, in close consultation with the Ministry of Interior, hereby mandates the temporary closure of the Ho Central Mosque for a duration of two weeks,” the statement said.
REGSEC further declared the mosque premises a crime scene to allow for investigations into the matter. “The location under dispute is hereby declared a crime scene to facilitate further investigation until a permanent resolution is achieved concerning the ongoing impasse,” the council stated.
The security body explained that the closure is not punitive but is intended to create space for calm dialogue and mediation.
“This decision has been taken solely in the interest of peace, unity and the long-term stability of the Muslim community in Ho,” REGSEC said. “
The temporary closure will provide a calm and neutral environment to facilitate mediation efforts aimed at resolving ongoing disputes and restoring harmony among all parties involved.”
REGSEC said its belief in dialogue as the best way to resolve the situation. “We believe that peaceful dialogue is the most powerful tool for resolving differences, and this period will be used to engage all stakeholders constructively to achieve a lasting and amicable resolution,” the statement added.
The council appealed to the two factions involved in the dispute to remain calm and cooperate with mediation efforts. “We earnestly appeal to the two feuding factions to exercise restraint, embrace dialogue, and give peace a genuine chance,” it said.
REGSEC also assured the public that the safety of worshippers remains a priority. “The safety of worshippers, the sanctity of the mosque and the unity of the community remain our highest priorities,” the statement noted.
The council expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved soon with the support of all parties. “With cooperation, mutual respect and sincere commitment to peace, the Ho Central Mosque will soon reopen to serve its rightful purpose as a place of worship, unity and spiritual growth for all,” REGSEC said.
