Entente Setif of Algeria have lifted the 2014 CAF Champions League title on the away goals rule after their 1-1 draw with AS Vita of DR Congo on Saturday night to win 3-3 on aggregate.
Setif become the first Algerian team to be crowned African club kings since 1990 when JSK beat Nkana of Zambia.
The title was also Setif’s second after lifting the old African club Champions cup in 1988.
Meanwhile, Setif had Vita on the back foot in the first half in Blida in which both clubs came into the match with a 2-2 scoreline from last Sunday’s first leg in Kinshasa.
Vita though shrugged off the pressure and were unfortunate not to find the target in the 11th minute when a Ndombe Mubele downward header from Yunus Sentamu’s fine cross went wide.
Ten minutes later, Nzinga Luvumbu’s free kick was parried by Sofiane Khedairia.
The deadlock was broken in the 50th minute when Sofiane Younes tapped in a El-Hedi Belamairi cross from close-range after the latter beat Patou Ebunga before delivering the ball.
Setif’s lead lasted for just four minutes when Luvumbu crossed the ball for Lema Mabidi who smashed in a volley past Khedairia.
Setif had a great chance to win the game in the 70th minute when Akram Djahnit’s cheeky shot saved by Nelson Lukong but the home side had done enough to be crowned champions.
