Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies have pleaded with President Nana Akufo-Addo for official cars to do their work.

At an orientation programme for MMDAs in Accra Wednesday, Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan in the Greater Accra region, Alex Adumoah, spoke for many of his colleagues when he revealed their need to the president.

To thundering applause, he told the president "Sir, our work to transform our district calls for high mobility."

"We are appealing to you sir, for good and durable means of transportation to be able to do this."

The government last March announced it has banned the purchase of new vehicles by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Announcing the ban, the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare in a letter directed that MDA make use of "existing fleet of vehicles in their respective transport pools.”

The government explained the ban is to help government save money to implement an ambitious programme of development.

The President's use of a vehicle bought in 2007 was held out as an example of modesty worth emulating.

While the government has banned the buying of new cars, it has been aggressive in retreiving vehicles believed to belong to the state but in the unauthorised possession of former government officials.

Mahama DCEs leave scary debts for Akufo-Addo replacements

Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies also begged central government for bail-out over debts they have inherited.

Some of the Chief Executives lamented, their predecessors left unsettled huge debts which threatens to cripple their work even before it really begins.

"Sir, we have inherited debts in our various districts" Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan in the greater Accra region, Alex Adumoah disclosed to President Akufo Addo.

Deputy Local Government minister Osei Bonsu Amoah confirmed the revelations on Joy News Wednesday but was unable to disclose the size of the debt.

The Akuapem South MP explained, the ministry was compiling the debt profile of MMDAs.

The list, he said, would be discussed at the Economic Management Team chaired by the Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The list after scrutiny will be presented to Cabinet for a payment plan to be agreed. He warned, the government may not honour debts that have not been properly approved by the Public Procurement Authority.
