The acrimonious debates and divisions in the opposition New Patriotic Party appears to be deepening.
Greater Accra regional Chairman of the party, Mr. Ishmael Ashitey, is accusing party General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong of unfairness.
Mr. Ashitey said letters written by the General Secretary granting waivers to some parliamentary aspirants were discriminatory.
Citing a disadvantaged Obom-Domeabra constituency, the chairman said, “If you want to give a waiver, I have no problem with it but two people were contesting so give the waiver to the two but you gave the waiver to one and you left the other one, it means you are not being fair.”
Mr. Kwabena Agyapong Monday told Joy FM’s Evans Mensah he was unaware of a Steering Committee meeting called by the party.
He said he was in Kumasi eating fufu at the time he was called.
Party insiders have contradicted his claim, insisting he was aware of the meeting contrary to what he told the media.
Even before that controversy dies down, letters he issued waiving the payment of filing fees of GHC30,000 for persons contesting the parliamentary primaries of the party have ignited another rancorous round of argument.
“One woman, Tina Mensah paid half (GHC15000) because Kwabena Agyapong told her to pay half,” Mr. Ashitey said.
According to him, the NPP General Secretary cannot unilaterally issue waivers which are unfair.
