The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested twenty-two Togolese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

In a post shared on Facebook on Friday, the police said the arrests were carried out on Thursday, January 22, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by a team of police officers.

According to police sources, the suspects were intercepted while travelling in a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, which was stopped during a routine security operation.

"The arrest was effected on 23rd January, 2026 when a team of police officers intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12. The vehicle was being driven by suspect Abdul Majeed Yakubu," the post read.

The vehicle was reportedly being driven by one Abdul Majeed Yakubu, who is assisting police with investigations.

Upon interrogation, the occupants of the truck disclosed that they were citizens of Togo and were en route to Tuntumba, a community widely known for illegal mining activities in the area. They allegedly intended to engage in unauthorised mining operations upon arrival.

"Upon interrogation, the occupants stated that they were nationals of Togo and were travelling to Tuntumba, a known illegal mining community, with the intention of engaging in galamsey activities."

All twenty-two suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. The police have indicated that the group will be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service to facilitate the necessary immigration and legal processes in line with Ghana’s laws.

The Savannah Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations into the matter are ongoing and has pledged to provide further updates as developments unfold.
