Former Auditor General of Ghana, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has managed cases of non-declaration of assets.
He contended that the Commission’s efforts in this area have been inadequate and require significant improvement.
Speaking on Joy FM's *Super Morning Show* on Thursday, January 23, Mr Domelevo highlighted the critical role of CHRAJ in enforcing accountability measures, especially asset declaration by public officials.
“I think the way CHRAJ has handled the non-declaration of assets, I beg to differ, it is not the best, and more needs to be done,” he remarked, emphasising the need for stricter oversight.
The former Auditor General noted that the declaration of assets is a fundamental requirement for ensuring transparency and reducing corruption within public office.
He expressed concern that lax enforcement by CHRAJ undermines the effectiveness of this accountability mechanism, allowing non-compliance to persist unchecked.
Mr Domelevo also called for a more robust approach to addressing asset declaration violations.
He suggested that CHRAJ take decisive action against defaulters, including thorough investigations and the imposition of sanctions where necessary.
This, he argued, would send a strong message about the importance of compliance and the consequences of neglecting legal obligations.
In conclusion, Domelevo reiterated his belief that CHRAJ’s current efforts are insufficient to deter non-compliance effectively.
He urged the Commission to adopt proactive measures that ensure all public officials declare their assets as mandated by law, fostering greater accountability and trust in governance.
