The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah says negligence on the part of the Electoral Commission (EC) is to be blamed for the multiple individual registrations in the new electoral roll.
His comments come after the EC's chairperson, Jean Mensa revealed that 6,080 prospective voters registered multiple times in the just ended nationwide registration exercise.
The commission has however promised to make public, names and other details of the lawbreakers on its website in the coming days.
Reacting to this during an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse Thursday, the PNC Chairman said the EC should be blamed for the current outcome.
According to him, if the EC had listened to the appeals of the Coalition of Parties against the new voters’ register, these multiple registrations would have been avoided.
Mr Mornah further questioned the purpose of creating a new register if the outcome of the new roll is no different from the previous one.
“If today you [EC] are admitting that there are multiple registrations then you, the Electoral Commission should be the one that should be taken to court.
“This is because you [EC] lied and deceived the people of Ghana that you were going to create a perfect system that would not carry this impurity and at the end of the day you are telling us that the major reason for which you carried out this exercise has been a failure,” he said.
He then added: “The point is that you the Electoral Commission failed to put in the checks that would ensure that the people do not register more than once.”
