The Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of the Christian Council of Ghana has urged the Electoral Commission to enhance its methods in addressing issues raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), concerning the voter's register.
According to the EPG, the concerns raised by the NDC could impact the level of trust Ghanaians have in the Commission.
The group is thus advising the EC to rebuild trust and confidence among the electorate ahead of the 2024 elections in December.
“Nevertheless, the 2024 polls are being conducted under intensified skepticism, particularly due to concerns raised by the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the 2024 voter's register and related issues,” the group said.
This was contained in a statement dated September 17.
The EKG, therefore, called on the EC to put measures in place to ensure transparent communication with all stakeholders including the NDC to ensure clarity and transparency.
“We therefore call on the Electoral Commissioner to elevate her consultations and participatory methods and ensure increased transparency and improved communication with stakeholders to cultivate confidence and trust. This is especially crucial in this election year,” portions of the release added.
This follows the NDC's demands for a forensic audit of the voter's register, due to allegations of discrepancies identified in the register.
On the other hand, the EPG appealed to the leaders of the NDC to ensure peace while exercising their rights. The release also urged the NDC to avoid inciting their followers to act in ways that could disrupt the peace of the nation while demanding a review of the voter's register.
The Eminent Persons Group also called on security agencies to remain professional and neutral in the execution of their duties before, during, and after the elections.
The group further urged all other stakeholders to be tolerant, open to dialogue, and to prioritise the supreme interest of the nation.
“The EPG urges all stakeholders to be tolerant, use dialogue at all times, and work in the supreme interest of the good people of Ghana.”
