Fire Saturday evening gutted the Aboadze Thermal Plant at Takoradi and destroyed one of the power generating units. The unit is responsible for generating 110 megawatts of electricity, according to Mr. Kweku Andoh Awotwi, Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA).
It took firemen from the plant and reinforcement from the Sekondi Fire Station about an hour to put out the fire whose source is yet to be ascertained.
Joy News correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah says the fire, which started at about 7pm, consumed the entire unit, leaving two other units to contribute about 220 units to the national grid.
The development quickly raised concerns of possible power rationing or unannounced outages, however, Kweku Awotwi in an interview with Joy FM assured there is enough power generation to make for the lost unit pending the replacement of a generator at the lost unit.
He said there is already a transformer in store but will take a little bit of time to install.
“It means the unit is down until we get the transformer replaced. We actually have one in the country to replace it so it will take a bit of time …for now there’s no implication for load shedding. We are not going to have to shed load because we’ve lost it because we have capacity…” he assured.
