The decision of a former employee of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to illegally reconnect electricity to a friend's house during a blackout last Friday has led to his death. The incident, which happened at Maamobi Accra, had the deceased, 42-year-old Godwin Semeko, electrocuted on the electrical pole while attempting to reconnect power supply to one Issah whose house experienced a power outage. Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic on Monday, the Crime Officer at the Kotobabi Police Station, ASP John Coffie, stated that a sister of the deceased, Ms Joyce Semeko, in the company of the Assembly Member of the Kwaotsuru Electoral Area, Hajia Damata Sulemana, reported the incident to the Police. According to the story, Godwin who was an employee of Print ex Limited had returned from work and complained of not feeling too well. ASP Coffie said while resting, Issah allegedly came to engage him to work on reconnecting his house because he was experiencing a blackout while other people in the neighbourhood watched the opening ceremony of the World Cup fiesta in South Africa. He said eyewitnesses account indicated that the deceased got electrocuted and instantly fell on the ground, became unconscious and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. He said preliminary examinations showed a swollen neck with blood oozing out of his mouth. ASP Coffie said the body had been deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital morgue pending autopsy. He said Issah, who had engaged the deceased to do the reconnection, was now at large and appealed to the public to report his whereabouts to the police. ASP Coffie advised the public to report electrical faults to the ECG rather than “employ wayside electricians”. Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
