Head of History Department at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, has asked President John Mahama to immediately cancel diplomatic relations with South Africa and also expel the rainbow nation's High Commissioner to Ghana.

Speaking Monday on Adom FM current affairs program Burning Issues Prof Osei Kwarteng said other African countries must also withdraw their relations with South Africa for authorities in that country to sit up.

“If I were president john Mahama or his advisor, I will immediately expel South Africa's High Commissioner to Ghana and also call off Ghana’s ambassador to South Africa and break diplomatic ties with them” he charged.

Ten African nationals, including two Mozambican, two Ethiopians, one Zimbabwean, one Bangladeshi, one Swaziland and one Somali have been confirmed dead in xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Two South Africans have also died in the attacks which have entered a third week.

Four Ghanaians, including a two-month-old baby were found dead and locked up in a salon in Hiebron South Africa, however, Johannesburg says the deaths were not caused by the attacks.

Prof Osei Kwarteng said the South African economy, the second biggest in Africa, would collapse should other African countries too decide to sack all South African nationals from their countries.

According to him, since the xenophobic attacks broke, African leaders have been upholding diplomacy instead of humanity, a situation he said was unfortunate.

“From what is going on in South Africa I don’t think African unity will be possible”, he said.

He said President Mahama must act swiftly and not place diplomacy above humanity.
