Veteran football administrator, Walter Yankah has launched a scathing attack on young coaches, describing them as ‘selfish’ with no respect for authority.
Coach Yankah said the young and upcoming coaches consistently ignore and turn deaf ears to advice from their senior colleagues, a growing trend he has tagged as worrisome to the development of the sport.
Speaking to the GNA Sports, the outspoken Yankah explained that the total disregard of the senior coaches by their juniors was disturbing and has called on authorities to call them to order.
The coach’s outburst comes in the wake of a personal experience when his recommendation to one of the coaches of the junior national teams was quashed by the latter.
“Sometimes you may notice a good player somewhere, and when you tell him (coach) to go and observe the player, he would say no.
“It is the same story when you observe some technical lapses in his team.”
Yankah, until recently General Manager of Sekondi Eleven Wise said the selfish approach of some of the young coaches has led to selection of ‘mediocre’ players for the country’s various national teams.
“The selection of players must be on merit. Usually, there is favouritism in the selection exercise and the best players are not always selected.”
With coaching experience at Togolese side, AS Douanes and local side, Accra Great Olympics, Yankah believes he has a lot to offer the young and upcoming coaches.
He has therefore called on the president of the Ghana Football Association, (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi to recognize the value of veteran coaches on his second term to push the football development of agenda to a resounding level.
Coach Yankah is fondly remembered for guiding AS Douanes against Accra Hearts of Oak in the CAF Champions League qualifier in 2003.
