The Election Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has formally requested a postponement of the swearing-in ceremony for the Ashanti Region executives following a petition challenging the results of the June 30 regional elections.
In a statement issued Wednesday, July 9, EDAC confirmed receipt of a petition specifically contesting the outcome for the position of Ashanti Region Chairperson. After an initial review, the committee concluded that the petition meets the requirements outlined in the GJA Constitution and will be investigated accordingly.
“After reviewing the petition, EDAC is satisfied that it meets the constitutional requirements and will adjudicate on the matter,” the committee said.
The swearing-in of both National and Regional Executives is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 11, but EDAC is urging the postponement of the Ashanti Region segment until the petition is resolved.
“Given the ongoing petition concerning the Ashanti Region, we respectfully request that the swearing-in for the Ashanti Region executives be postponed until after the determination of this matter,” the statement read.
EDAC also assured members of the association and the public that the petition will be addressed through a fair and transparent process.
“We will review the petition, gather evidence, and conduct hearings in accordance with the GJA Constitution,” the committee noted, adding that a full timeline will be shared with stakeholders in due course.
In the meantime, EDAC is calling for patience and calm from all parties involved. “We urge all parties involved, GJA members, and the public to remain calm and respectful during this process,” the committee appealed. “EDAC assures you of our diligence and impartiality in handling the petition.”
