The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM) have sent separate messages to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on the murder of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Samuel Ennin.
A GNAT letter addressed to the President of GJA signed by Joseph Kwaku Edjei, National President of GNAT, said GNAT had learned with shock the brutal murder of Mr Ennin last Friday.
"On behalf of the management and entire membership of GNAT, we wish to express our profound condolence to you and to the members of the GJA on this grave loss.
"It is our prayer that the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be arrested and brought to book."
A statement signed by Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, Executive Director of WACAM, said the association condemned the killing of Mr Ennin as a "disgraceful and barbaric act" and called on all peace-loving Ghanaians to condemn such acts.
WACAM said as an advocacy organisation devoted to the protection of the right of marginalised people in mining communities, it treasured the work of the media, especially a journalist like Mr Ennin who was known to be a strong advocate of good governance.
"He consistently provided a voice for the marginalised in society. We recall his strong position against the frequent violation of the rights of mining communities and his repeated calls on government and multi-national companies to respect the rights of mining communities."
WACAM described him as a "journalist with a conscience" and it was unfortunate that spineless gagsters had killed him.
Unknown gunmen shot and killed Mr Ennin on Friday night at a popular spot at Pankrono Estate in Kumasi.
Mr Ennin, News Editor of the Ash FM in Kumasi, was relaxing with some staff and friends of the radio station when he was shot.
According to eyewitnesses the assailants, who were in an unregistered white saloon car entered the spot and without any provocation shot the deceased in the stomach after firing indiscriminately to frighten customers.
The assailants then entered their vehicle and drove away.
Mr Ennin was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he died.
He was the host of the "Point of Order", a political magazine programme of the station that is aired on Saturday mornings.
He was also a regular panel member of the station's Morning Show programme dubbed "Ash Ade Akyeabia".
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has offered a 10 million-cedi reward to anyone or group of persons who will provide information leading to the arrest of the murderers of Mr Ennin.
The association has requested all media houses to fly red flags at half-mast for four days starting on Tuesday, February 13 in memory of Mr Ennin.
