The President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has emphasised that the government does not condone the killing of civilians by security personnel under any circumstances.
Speaking on JoyNews’ *AM Show*, he addressed concerns following a recent clash in Obuasi, which resulted in the loss of lives.
"This government does not encourage or support any action where security operatives take the law into their own hands, leading to unnecessary loss of lives," he stated.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu expressed concern over the rising incidents of security personnel using excessive force and assured Ghanaians that steps would be taken to address these issues. He confirmed that a thorough investigation was underway into the Obuasi incident and added that security agencies need sufficient time to conduct their work properly. "We expect the investigation to be completed within a reasonable timeframe. Once the report is ready, appropriate action will be taken," he said.
He also stressed the need for reforms in operational procedures to prevent the misuse of excessive force by security personnel. "If it emerges that there are gaps in the enforcement of the law, leading to unnecessary deaths, we must address those gaps and ensure security operatives follow proper procedures," he explained.
On the matter of mining, Mr Kwakye Ofosu reiterated that all mining activities must be carried out within the framework of Ghanaian law. He warned against illegal mining and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to streamlining the mining sector.
"The NDC government has been in office for barely two weeks, but we are committed to tackling the challenges in the mining sector. Illegal mining must be addressed comprehensively, and all mining activities must follow due process to avoid environmental damage," he explained.
He concluded by urging both the public and security personnel to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to respect legal processes in determining guilt or innocence.
"Retribution outside the law is not allowed in Ghana. Every accused person must go through due process," he added.
