The government of Ghana is reviewing its position on the continued deployment of Ghanaian troops to Lebanon following a missile attack that injured four soldiers serving in a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, March 6, when a Ghanaian position operating under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile fire in southern Lebanon.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the Battalion Headquarters was struck by two missiles between 17:45 and 17:52 local time.
Four soldiers sustained injuries in the attack. Military authorities reported that three of the personnel are currently in stable condition, while the fourth, who suffered critical injuries, has been airlifted to Beirut to undergo surgery.
The development has raised fresh concerns about the safety of Ghanaian peacekeepers stationed in the conflict-prone region, particularly as tensions continue to affect parts of southern Lebanon where international forces are deployed.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, March 7, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, said the government is consulting the military high command to determine the appropriate course of action regarding Ghana’s presence in the mission.
“Anything is possible. Government is considering all options to decide on what to do going forward,” he stated.
Mr Brogya Genfi also noted that the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon is gradually drawing to a close and that Ghana has already begun reducing its troop numbers in the area.
According to him, more than 200 soldiers have been withdrawn in recent months, leaving about 600 Ghanaian troops currently serving in the mission.
