The government has seized about GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash linked to people suspected of involvement in illicit drug trafficking.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed this during his appearance at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24.

He said the action formed part of an intelligence-led campaign targeting the financial networks and assets of suspected drug traffickers, beyond the arrest of users and distributors.

“Our campaign is not just [targeted] at the users, but those who are bringing it,” the Minister said.

He explained that security agencies would continue to pursue suspected traffickers and freeze their assets while prosecution was ongoing.

“When we get them, we seize their assets, or we taint their assets, freezing them while the prosecution is going on,” he stated.

According to Mr Mohammed-Mubarak, 73 assets connected to suspected drug-related activities had been traced during the period under review. About 19 kilogrammes of gold had also been seized in suspected drug money-laundering cases.

“Cash that has been associated with these persons involved in these drugs, about 6.9 million and then about 440,000 US dollars, has been restrained,” he said.

The Minister said the seizures reflected the government’s broader strategy of disrupting the financial infrastructure supporting the illicit drug trade.

He disclosed that between January 2025 and July 2026, security agencies seized more than 8,500 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs and about 45.4 million tramadol tablets.

A total of 217 arrests were made, while 165 prosecutions were initiated as part of the government’s intensified campaign against drug trafficking and abuse.
