The Minister for the Interior has renewed the curfew imposed on Bawku and its environs with immediate effect from today 2nd April 2, 2010.
The curfew imposed “on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument” will now be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 am each day.
A statement signed by Interior Minister, Martin Amidu, said government is appealing “to the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders and the good people of the area to exercise maximum restraint in the face of provocation and to ensure that sustainable peace returns to the area soon.”
The curfew comes in the wake of recent disturbances that have left a number of people dead.
Government said it is determined to ensure law and order in the area at all times and urges the people of the area to cooperate with the security agencies in the performance of their duties.
“Meanwhile, government will like to reiterate that there is a ban on all persons in the Bawku municipality and its immediate environs – Zabugu, Binduri, Pusiga and Zoasi – from carrying arms, ammunitions or any offensive weapons, and any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement said.
