President John Mahama has announced that his administration will prioritise locally manufactured products in all government procurement processes as part of efforts to boost Ghana’s agribusiness sector and strengthen the local economy.
Speaking at the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra, President Mahama said the government, through the 24-hour+ Economy Secretariat, is compiling a comprehensive list of Ghana-made products, including agro-processed goods.
“Because the government is the biggest spender in the economy, those products would be given priority in case of any procurement by any government agency,” President Mahama stated.
“It’s only when they cannot find a product that is manufactured in Ghana that they would be permitted to buy a foreign product.”
The move, the president explained, aims to guarantee a ready market for local agribusinesses and agro-processors while reinforcing the country’s industrial base under the Feed the Industry programme.
Describing the initiative as “central to the agribusiness vision,” President Mahama said the Feed the Industry strategy seeks to transform Ghana’s agro-processing industries into sustainable engines of economic growth by securing consistent, high-quality supply chains.
The policy forms a critical part of the broader 24-hour economy framework, which seeks to unlock opportunities in agriculture, industry, and exports through innovation, investment, and inclusive growth.
