Former Finance Minister Dr Amin Adam has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider historical trends when selecting the party’s flagbearer, arguing that repeating a candidate could be key to electoral success.
Speaking on the AM show, Dr Adam said the party has a clear pattern: first-time candidates often lose, while those who are repeated tend to win.
“In our party, anytime we have put up a candidate for the first time, that candidate lost the election.
We put up Professor Adu Boahen in 1992; he lost. We put him out for the first time, and he lost. We put President Kufuor in 1996 for the first time, but he lost.
We put Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008 for the first time, and he lost. We put Bawumia in 2024 for the first time, and he lost,” he explained.
Dr Adam added that history suggests a different outcome for repeated candidates. “We repeated Kufuor twice, we won.
So, what does our history tell us as a party? If we repeat Bawumia, we will win. Because history has demonstrated and history repeats itself,” he said.
The comments come amid preparations for the NPP’s flagbearer primaries, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The party’s delegates will determine who will lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections, a contest that has attracted significant attention from party members and political analysts alike.
