The lawyer for embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says his client remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and has yet to meet the full conditions of his bail.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, May 30, Andy Appiah-Kubi clarified that while there are circulating reports that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped in to secure a second surety for Wontumi, he has no such confirmation.
“I don’t have any information from the former Vice President standing surety or declaring his intention to stand surety,” he stated.
It has been four days since Wontumi’s arrest over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.
He was granted bail to the tune of GH₵50 million, with two sureties, both to be justified. So far, only one of the required sureties has been secured.
Mr Appiah-Kubi stated that he is hopeful both sureties will be filed soon to facilitate the release of the embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman from EOCO’s custody.
“We are hoping to file for both sureties before the close of day,” he added.
"We thought of the possibility of going to court for a variation of the condition," adding, “As I speak now, we have filed this application in court. Nevertheless, we are hoping to receive the second person to stand as surety and the documentation to be justified so we can proceed with his release.”
He revealed that Wontumi, who has been unwell since his detention, is currently receiving medical attention at a clinic. He dismissed claims that his client is on a hunger strike.
The lawyer also criticised the bail terms imposed by EOCO, describing them as excessive and unfair.
