Jonathan Gavi, a resource person at the Brand Ghana Office, has urged Ghanaians to call the country’s highest mountain by its right name, Mountain Afadjato.

He explained that contrary to explanations by persons that saying Mountain Afadjato is a tautology, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Mount Afadjato is the highest mountain in Ghana, at an elevation of 885 metres (2,904 ft) and some have argued that the ‘to’ in the name means mountain in Ewe and it is therefore tautology to prefix or add the mountain to the name.

The mountain is located in the Agumatsa Range near the villages of Liati Wote and Gbledi, in the Volta Region of Ghana at the border with Togo.

Mr Gavi giving patrons of The Multimedia Group Afadjato Climb the history of the mountain said the ‘to’ is an integral part of the mountain’s name and, therefore, should be called Mountain Afadjato.

“The ‘to’ in Afadjato is intrinsically part of the name Afadjato so the name is [part] of a whole sentence so that if you take it out and make it Mount Afadja, you are making a gross mistake it’s like taking part of my name away.”

“Otherwise, we should stop saying, Christiansborg Castle, because the borg in Christiansborg also means castle,” he said and urged that, “Let’s continue to say Mountain Afadjato. It is not tautological at all.”

The Afadjato climb was part of activities by The Multimedia Group to celebrate Ghana in the month of March. All platforms of The Multimedia Group – radio, TV and online – highlighted the uniqueness of Ghana this month and the climb was one of them.

It was the best feeling in the world for the many who joined The Multimedia Group and defied all odds to make it to the peak of Ghana’s highest mountain, Afadjato on Saturday.

The climb to the top of Afadjato did not come easy for both grown-ups and children, who had to fight some of nature’s most challenging obstacles to finally shout and rejoice that they have also managed to climb the most talked about mountain in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts gave The Multimedia Group thumbs up for the organising the climb.

“I’m really honoured to be part of this beautiful occasion,” she said.

She noted that the Ministry recently launched the domestic tourism drive, ‘Explore Ghana’ and the aim is for people to see Ghana, know Ghana and love Ghana and, therefore, it came as an exciting news “to me when I heard that Multimedia has decided to use the month of March as heritage month to celebrate everything Ghanaian.”

The minister acknowledged the importance and role of private sector in pushing Ghana's tourism.

“It’s very heart-warming that Multimedia has decided to drive tourism,” said the Minister

She later told Myjoyonline.com that plans are far advanced for the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and The Multimedia Group to partner on several projects to help push Ghana's tourism.

Some of the patrons, who managed to successfully climb the mountain, thanked The Multimedia Group for organising the event. “It’s been exciting,” one said.

Some noted that although the task was very challenging, they wouldn’t mind doing it again.
