If you keep facing difficulty in bringing up your child as a parent, there is no shame or harm in seeking help from other parents or counsellors.
According to Mr Nortey Dua - a Clinical Psychologist, parenting can be a daunting task, one that requires many approaches to ensure that your ward has the best of life, hence the need for parents if in trouble to reach out to professionals and well-informed persons for assistance.
Discussing the life of teenagers and the role parents play on Joy FM's show, Home Affairs, Mr Nortey ascribed that owing to the cognitive development of a child, physical, pyschological and emotional transition they undergo in puberty, they always want answers and reasons for certain phenomena.
Should parents shun their wards off or fail to provide these answers, he noted that such children would seek other alternatives for assistance - some channels may not be productive or influence the child negatively.
Touching on the controversial LGBTQI discussion that hit Ghana's media space early this year, he noted that due to the world being a global platform, children are acquainted with such information and may have questions on a few issues..
"The space has changed, and all these things are being processed by your children. You are not the only one hearing about LGBTQ and all those things. Your children are hearing these things and processing them. Unfortunately, the media space they are in and the media they consume are also throwing all these signals at them. So this is the critical question. Did my child along this journey get help and support from me to affirm a sexual identity?
"When you kill a goat or animals in the house, the children ask questions. These are early opportunities to now start laying down some of these lessons. When you deflect and dodge these ones, you are failing to lay down the foundations for this kind of things….These days we can have a girl of sometimes 8 or 9 who has started menstruating already. So did you just say it happened and keep yourself clean or did you relate it to larger issues?" he said.
He, therefore, advised parents not to be reluctant in asking for help becuase receiving help does not imply one has failed in the discharge of his or her duties but is keen to see the progress of their child.
He added that without seeking help, it would be difficult if not impossible for parents to assist their wards in understanding what they are going through during the adolescent stage.
Speaking with host Edem Knight-Tay, he also stated that it is imperative for parents to analyse the situation they are faced with and tune their parenting style so as to prevent clashes with their children.
"We have what we call situational leadership and we have situational patenting. That is based on the situation and specifics and the uniqueness of the child, you tune your strategy to suit the child and the situation," he said.
