The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has said that he called for the early conduct of the party’s presidential primaries, citing growing concerns over internal fatigue and declining enthusiasm among party members.
This comes after a 2024 presidential candidate aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, who has formally withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security threats to his supporters as the reason behind the decision.
The move comes in the wake of a violent altercation in Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed.
The injured individual, affiliated with Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Agyapong’s team to perform at a gathering held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, Mr Boakye acknowledged a noticeable withdrawal of some long-serving members from active participation, stressing the urgent need for the party to manage its internal affairs more strategically.
“We know a number of persons who are laying their boots,” he remarked.
He further added “We just have to manage it in a proper manner. That is why for me, I have called for the presidential primaries to be conducted very early.”
Mr Boakye argued that the NPP’s prolonged internal electoral processes in past years have often led to internal divisions, sapping momentum and unity ahead of national contests.
“It looks like we spend too much time on internal elections and then we keep hurting ourselves,” he concluded.
