Tension has engulfed the sleepy village of Nweneso in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region after a 33-year-old farmer, Yaw Nkrumah butchered his wife, Afua Amankwaa aka Naomi to death in the middle of a road linking two communities on Friday.
The man, who got married to Naomi about 11 years ago, has also been killed after he was allegedly beaten by angry youth of the community that discovered his home later on the night of Saturday, while packing up in an attempt to flee the area.
The incident, reminiscent of the infamous Bedwoase episode involving Akwasi Tabi and his wife Yaa Baby, sparked fear and apprehension in the community, as some residents are in a state of perplexity, contcmplating to flee home for fear of being arrested.
Yaw Nkrumah took the bloody action after tracing the wife from the community to the Nweneso No.3 graveyard around 2 pm on Friday.
Naomi, a mother of three, was slashed with a cutlass at the back, neck, and hands by her husband, who was harbouring hatred for the woman after she served notice to divorce him.
Nkrumah attacked her when she was on her way to Nyade, a nearby community, to sell her fried fish day, while in the company of one Maame Yaa, a cosmetics seller, Opanin Anthony Nsiah, head of Naomi's family told DAILY GUIDE.
According to him, a misunderstanding ensued between the couple about a week ago after the man was caught having an extra marital affair with a lady in one of the nearby communities, resulting in separation.
"As we were going, Naomi's husband called her from behind and advanced towards us. Yaw Nkrumah the therefore wanted to know from Naomi whether she meant to walk out of the marriage as indicated earlier to him, and before she could respond, the man jerked her with the cutlass he was holding and slashed her several times," Maame Yaa reportedly told the family.
Opanin Nsiah said Nkrumah killed Afua Amankwa, also 33, because she had made up her mind to end the conjugal journey between them over allegations that the man repeatedly flirted with another woman.
He narrated that his deceased niece told the family that the man, last week, locked up the door to their room while she and the children were asleep and went to sleep at his girlfriend's house till the next morning.
According to the Abusua Panin, Afua Amankankwa would not budge in spite of several meetings held solve the problem, and therefore moved out of the man's house without any death threats from Nkrumah.
"I was there that Friday afternoon when news got to me that Nkrumah had butchered my niece and she was lying in a pool of blood, but she died subsequently before we got to the scene," Opanin Nsiah stated in a sorrowful manner.
The family of Nkrumah also confirmed that the deceased persons were in a conjugal relationship, but separated a week ago due to a misunderstanding between them.
Isaac Sarpong, Nkrumah's nephew, told DAILY GUIDE the couple had been fighting over the infidelity issue in recent times though they were living peacefully until the bloody incident.
He however said he was not aware the misunderstanding between them had degenerated into hatred, prompting the action.
Even though he was evasive with his answers, Sarpong, who is also the Assembly member for the community, admitted he was told by some residents his uncle was behind the death of Afua Amankwaa after he (Sarpon) returned from farm on Friday.
The Odikro of Nweneso No 3, Paul Asiedu, was taken aback by the murder of the woman and the subsequent bloody action of the youth, who beat to death the suspect, plunging the community into unending grief.
The bodies of both husband and wife have been deposited at the morgue after police officers from Asokwa in Kumasi stormed the farming community yesterday morning to carry out investigations, the paper gathered.
