Joycelyn Tetteh, Member of Parliament for North Dayi Constituency, has recounted significant challenges she faced during her re-election bid, citing deliberate acts of sabotage by the District Chief Executive (DCE) of her district.
Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Tetteh alleged that several National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs were undermined by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), particularly in her constituency.
She claimed that government fertilisers meant for farmers were hoarded in the DCE's residence and distributed for vote-buying purposes. Additionally, projects she initiated were deliberately stalled as the DCE avoided signing cheques required to complete them.
“The NPP didn’t have a message during the campaign. They only encouraged voters to come for fertilisers in exchange for votes. I’ve suffered greatly as an opposition MP,” Tetteh stated. She explained that the DCE, who had contested and lost against her in the 2020 elections, sought to frustrate her efforts during the 2024 campaign.
“In 2024, the DCE made things extremely difficult for me, but through hard work, I managed to secure a win,” she added, highlighting the obstacles she had to overcome to retain the seat for her party.
Tetteh further revealed that the DCE’s actions were driven by fear of empowering her through the District Assembly Common Fund to complete projects. “I had to rely on NGOs to support my vision. Apart from that, the situation was terrible. The DCE only signed for outdated items, which had no significant impact on the elections,” she noted.
Despite reporting the matter to the Local Government and Regional Minister, she stated that no meaningful action was taken. Tetteh concluded by expressing her readiness to serve in any capacity within the current government, saying, “We are now in government, and I am eager to contribute my quota wherever the president sees fit.”
