JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu was assaulted by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathiser today while covering the detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters.
Part of a growing crowd of NPP supporters gathered outside EOCO, verbally harassed Latif Iddrisu, and physically assaulted him.
The journalist was covering Chairman Wontumi’s arrest when the altercation occurred.
Multiple attackers accused Latif Iddrisu of biased reporting before slapping and hurling materials at him amid chaos.
Chairman Wontumi had earlier been at the CID headquarters for further questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining and mining in forest reserves and entering the forest reserve without authorisation.
This came shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
He was directed to reappear after he turned himself in yesterday as part of his bail conditions, and he complied.
However, EOCO operatives intercepted him upon his exit on Tuesday, May 27.
The exact reasons for his arrest remain unclear.
EOCO has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
