The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has announced its intensive care units closed down for renovation more than two years ago is now operational.

The urology, neurology and general surgery units shutdown two months ago will also be reopened Monday.

“The power issues in terms of electricity controls have been resolved theatre tables have been installed, the last bit is what we call an infusion pump and that was airlifted into the country on Saturday. The theatre itself can be used as we speak,” Chief Executive Officer of  Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Gilbert Buckle, told Joy News Sunday.

The closure of the facilities led to long queues at the surgical unit, a situation that may have resulted in the death of a female student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

A Joy News investigative report revealed 21-year-old Abigail Owusu Diko may have died after her surgery was delayed, prompting investigations into her death.

Dr. Buckle announced the opening of the ICUs at the launch of the Korle Bu Trust Fund.  The Fund is expected to provide funding to sustain the availability of equipment and consumables.

Dr Buckle is optimistic mistakes that led to the closure of the facilities will not recur.

He also disclosed to Joy News that the hospital has completed investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 21-year-old KNUST student.

The hospital says it will release details after the family is been officially informed about the findings.
