One of the stools belonging to the famed Asante female warrior, the late Yaa Asantwaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu, taken away by the British in their war with the Asantes in 1900 was over the weekend handed over to former President John Agyekum Kufuor by Exeter College through one of its alumnus, Ms Angela Palmers.
This was at the launch of the 700th anniversary of Exeter College which is one of the founding schools of the University of Oxford and of which former President Kufuor is an alumnus. Former President Kufuor promised to hand over the stool to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations was the main speaker at the ceremony at which ‘Pilgrims of the Night: Development Challenges,’ a book edited and co-authored by Ivor Agyeman-Duah was launched. Mr. Annan was also presented with a painting of the College.
Pilgrims of the Night: Development Challenges, is a collection of essays by renowned personalities, and has a foreword written by Frances Cairncross, Rector of Exeter College and contributions by former President Kufuor, Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka and Anthony Venables, former chief economist of the Department of International Development of the UK, among others.
Former President Kufuor has since returned home.
