As part of ongoing engagements with stakeholders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of a formal declaration, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has held discussions with the NDC Western Region Caucus.

The engagement formed part of a broader process of listening, consultation and dialogue with key stakeholders across the party on its future, the consolidation of its values, and the important task of positioning the NDC for sustained political success beyond the current administration.

At the heart of the engagement was a message of Restoration, Renewal and Resetting — restoring the values and principles that have sustained the NDC over the years, renewing the mindset and commitment of its members, and resetting the party’s structures and approach to respond effectively to the changing political and developmental aspirations of Ghanaians.

Opong-Fosu emphasised the importance of consolidating the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama and ensuring that the gains of his administration provide a strong foundation for the future of both the party and the country.

He noted that while delivering on the mandate entrusted to the NDC by the Ghanaian people remains paramount, the party must simultaneously begin the work of strengthening its internal cohesion, reconnecting with its grassroots, and preparing strategically for 2028 and beyond.

The discussion also underscored the need to preserve the NDC as a broad-based, inclusive and values-driven political tradition in which every member — from the branch level to the national leadership — has a meaningful role to play.

For Opong-Fosu, the next phase of the NDC’s development must be anchored in unity, discipline, institutional strength, and a renewed commitment to the founding ideals of probity, accountability and social justice.

The engagement with the Western Region Caucus is part of a continuing stakeholder consultation process. Similar engagements are expected with various groups and constituencies within the party as Opong-Fosu continues to listen, consult and share his vision ahead of an appropriate time for a formal declaration.

The central message remains clear: restore our values, renew our mindset, reset our party, consolidate the Mahama legacy, and build an NDC that is ready for 2028 and generations beyond.
