The Kumasi Zoo is said to have recorded the highest tourists with over 97,000 visitors patronizing the facility during the year 2011.
Over 97,000 tourists visited the Zoo making it the highest ever recorded in the history of the nation. This figure represents about 14% increase in what was recorded in the previous year.
The Zoo in Kumasi is currently the only functional one after the Accra Zoo was demolished to make way for the construction of the Jubilee House.
Majority of the animals were transported to Kumasi to populate the numbers there.
This made the Kumasi Zoo gain some popularity and became more attractive to tourists and visitors, mostly students who patronize the Zoo specifically for academic purposes as well as to have fun.
Executive Director for the Wildlife Division of Forestry Commission Nana disclosed in an interview with Adom News that, his outfit intends to upgrade the Zoo in Kumasi and improve upon existing structures in order to rake in more revenue from patrons.
Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah also disclosed plans to build a modern Zoo for Accra, to replace the current mini-Zoo created in the Achimota forest.
The Executive Director said a detailed plan of the ultra modern recreational facility costing GHC 250 million, has been submitted to government subject to approval.
Kofi Adu-Nsiah said his outfit has already begun preparations by training some animal species at the Achimota forest mini-Zoo to give visitors maximum satisfaction.
