Residents and businesses across more than twenty communities in Accra are set to face significant water supply disruption this Friday as the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) undertakes critical maintenance at the Wejia Water Treatment Plant.
In a release issued on Thursday, December 18, 2025, the utility company announced a scheduled shutdown of the plant from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 19th December 2025. The exercise is part of what GWCL describes as its ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply, particularly during the upcoming Christmas festivities.
The temporary shutdown will halt production and distribution, directly affecting water supply to a wide swathe of the capital. The affected areas explicitly named are: Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Wejia, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe and all adjoining communities.
Management has assured the public that adequate resources and logistics have been mobilised for the works, with technical teams expected to work assiduously to complete the task within the stipulated twelve-hour window. Customers have been strongly advised to store sufficient water in advance to minimise inconvenience.
The Managing Director of GWL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, emphasised the importance of the maintenance. "This maintenance exercise is crucial for sustaining the integrity of our water infrastructure and improving service delivery. We have deployed all necessary resources and will work diligently to complete the task on schedule," he said.
The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and appealed for public cooperation and understanding. Water production and distribution are expected to resume immediately upon completion of the works.
