LEAP Sikapa for Girls, an initiative of the LEAP Company Limited, recently held a career fair for more than 300 girls living in and around the Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The fair which hosted participants from 50 community schools in the Obuasi area, took place on October 25, as part of activities to mark the International Girls’ Day which fell on October 11.
The event which attracted opinion leaders, as well as traditional rulers from the communities involved, was also used to exhibit Sikapa products made by beneficiaries of the initiative.
They were taken through activities such responsible mining services, IT coding, metal works, carpentry and masonry.
Food and beverages as well as a fashion show using a combination of Sikapa products in fashion and beauty -soaps, beads, hair and facials – were also put on display.
LEAP Company Limited focuses on empowering girls economically through the provision of free technical and vocational training for girls after which they are connected to ready markets using its wide network.
More than 200 girls have benefited from this initiative directly and indirectly.
The programme targets girls between 12 and 22 years in and around Obuasi who are deprived of alternative livelihood projects as sources of survival. This goes a long way to protect these vulnerable girls from threats of negative socio-economic and illegal mining activities.
