President John Mahama has asked security to be on red alert following sporadic acts of violence by angry supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The order confirmed by deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Supporters have been protesting what they allege are rigged election results announced by the Electoral Commission on Sunday. Some have attacked members of the press and persons said to support the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC). On Tuesday, thousands of NPP supporters converged at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra in a wild demonstration where a man sporting an NDC t-shirt was allegedly stabbed by angry protesters. Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Ablakwa said the that president is unhappy with this turn of events and has asked security forces to take the necessary action to restore law and order. He claims to have heard reports that two NDC supporters have been killed by irate NPP supporters. He warned “nobody will be allowed to make this country ungovernable.” Sour grapes The Deputy Information Minister also dismissed allegations of vote rigging in Friday’s poll. Citing reports from CODEO and other international observer missions and congratulatory messages from the international community, he said that everybody appears to be happy with the organization and execution of the elections. He insisted the NPP has been “isolated” in its claims of electoral fraud and asked the NPP to be honest with their party supporters in order to ensure peace in the country. Mr. Ablakwa also described the NPP flagbearer’s call for peace as, "double standards and open hypocrisy."
