The Centre for Democratic Development, Ghana is urging President John Mahama to openly condemn government officials who make provocative comments on issues of national concern.
The call is coming at a time when some functionaries of governing National Democratic Congress have launched scathing attacks on some celebrities who are adding their voices to pressurize government to find a lasting solution to the power crisis.
Some of these celebrities have been labelled us prostitutes for speaking their minds on the national crisis, which the NDC activists rather find insulting to the presidency and had to respond in an equal or even harsher measure.
However, the Head of Research and Programs at the CDD, Dr. Franklin Oduro, has told Joy News these activists portray the government as one that is intolerant.
“We haven’t seen or heard the president who is the leader of the country coming out to condemn some of these things. It is becoming so repetitive, some officials in this government continue to do that, and we all know that some of these languages are bad. I think it is the responsibility of the president to call some of these people to order so that some of these things can be minimized," he said.
Meanwhile, presidential staffer, Sam George has emphatically expressed his disgust about the growing disrespect for the presidency, which he said “is completely unacceptable.”
“I think there is so much disrespect in our society; so much disrespect especially for the highest office of the land;…We cannot [live in] a country where anybody at all can just wake up and pass whatever comment about the office of the president or the presidency and justify it,” he told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday.
