Ghana’s Parliament has approved a bill that will make the spouse and children of Major Maxwell Mahama the state’s responsibility.
The bill was introduced in Parliament Tuesday, October 24 in fulfilment of President Nana Akufo-Addo's promise to the family of Major Mahama, a military officer lynched by a mob in Denkyira-Obuasi now New Oboase.
The soldier was murdered in May 2017 after residents of the Central Region town allegedly mistook him for an armed robber.
His death sparked debate in the country over the spate of mob justice.
The President pledged his government’s commitment to ensure the welfare of the children and wife of the late soldier.
He announced the setting up of a memorial Trust Fund with ¢500,000 as seed money.
The President also offered a personal contribution of ¢50,000 towards the Trust.
“It is a signal to the people of Ghana that when you die in service, the state will not leave you. It is a new beginning but already there are adequate provisions in the Ghana Armed Forces in such situations,” Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has said.
